The Coussins Family from 1690 to date
I would like to thank Philip Morrison (Cussins) for his considerable input. Philip is the grandson of Hyman Cussins, who was the brother to my Great Grandfather, Abraham Cussins. We have
now determined that Feivel (also known as Philip in the UK) is the
father of Abraham by locating the gravestone of In creating a Family Tree we have to have the reasons for that. In my opinion it is because we would like to see where we came from, add some flesh onto the bones of memory and try to give some definition to the family as a whole. In modern genealogy we have the added benefit of photographs and I urge everyone to immediately add the names and the family names to the reverse of your family photographs as your great great grandchildren may wish to to what I have done and add to the family tree. How frustrating to find old photographs and not know who these people were. It is also a slight to their memories as these family members lived and breathed and had lives that were as full as our own. Keep their names alive and keep the images relevant. If you have anything to add to our family tree, especially photographs, please scan these or send them to me for scanning and try and remember who these folk were. If you do not know, perhaps I can try and work out from the photograph paper, clothing style and facial similarity, who they were. Name changes: In the 20th century, the name on Abrahams side was somehow changed in my immediate line to Coussins. My Uncle Leslie always said that we should only have one S in the name but in reality its more than that as we should be called Rakusin or at best Cusin. These name changes were common when immigrants arrived and the immigration officer write down what he thought he heard or what he was given. Sometimes family head just changed the name to make the pronunciation easier for the country he was now in. A possible reason for the name variations in the Rakusin family could have been to determine the different branches of the family. Names like Sammy and Jack were anglicised variations of Samuel and Isaac. Some members of the family changed their names from Cusins to more -non Jewish -acceptable names and so unless we have that knowledge or are able to locate their Hebrew names, these family members could in fact be lost.
Here lies our Dear Father, Reb Abraham Yeshiahu [Isaiah] son of Shraga Feivel the Priest Coussin [actually the Hebrew letters would read Kuzhin] who passed away etc. [same as the English inscription].
This is a note from my researcher in Israel, Len Yodaiken.: 11th March 2006
Hi again Craig,
You have no idea what this gravestone has done to my
Ego./ In your acknowledging receipt of my e-mail, in which I laid out three
descent charts: one of the Leeds family, one showing your family descending
through Abram Ber and the last showing what I believed to be your descent
through Feivel. Also I wonder if you remember one of my early messages in
which I asked you if your family was of priestly descent (that of the Cohens)
of which it turned out that you had no knowledge. Well I have been vindicated
on both scores. Your great grandfather's inscription reads as follows:
Here lies our Dear Father, Reb Abraham Yeshiahu
[Isaiah] son of Shraga Feivel the Priest Coussin [actually the Hebrew letters
would read Kuzhin] who passed away etc. [same as the English inscription].
So we now know your exact descent and the exact
connection to the Leeds family. I am sending you a simplified descendents
chart covering everything that I have found on this branch from Efraim
Rakuzhin born about 1750, but not the details of your own immediate family. I
believe that you have commissioned Harvey to do that and he is much better
placed to be able to do it than I.
I am interested in the priestly aspect of your family
as my gut feeling tells me that we had a common ancestor back in the second
half of the 17th century. Two things are required, a) my researching the
18th century records which is a painstaking process as it involves examining
the name patterns of the families in those censuses, and b) your doing a DNA
test to see if your DNA matches that of my family, we can be sure of some sort
of a match as the Cohens have 5 markers common to all the descendents of Aaron
the Priest brother of Abraham. We know this from a DNA research project done
about 10 years ago.

10 th March 2006: Craig Hello,
I am the researcher of the Hirsh Hacohen tree
with his 8,000 descendants who in the 19th century became Judeikins (with 25
variations of the name), Damelins, Maseler and Kagan. The first three branches
of the family took their names from villages in the neighbourhood of Zagare
and the last is a Russian spelling of Cohen as, of course, they were all
Cohens.
The estate on which these villages were found, Zadakiai,
was in the 17th and 18th centuries a Royal estate belonging to the King of the
Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth. Rukuzhi (whence Rakuzhin) was in there also
right next to Zagare If your DNA shows up trumps, then the tree will
jump to between 8,500 and 9,000 names.
I was the first researcher to find a way of researching
18th century Lithuania when Jews did not have family names. In another e-mail
I will explain to you the process, I have evolved of doing this research.
I would be grateful if you would give me some
background to your own immediate family. Were both your parents, Jewish and if
so were they practicing Jews. This is not idle curiosity, it makes my life
easier if I don't have to explain Jewish naming customs and so on, as much of
our research will be based on this.

23 January 2006 Researched by Harvey Kaplin, Glasgow, and around the middles of this page is the line from 1753 researched by Len Yodaiken, Isreal. Dear Craig
Here is the report of my research at the records office:
1 I enclose the birth certificate of your grandmother, born Leba Feldman on 8 August 1894 in Glasgow. Her parents are listed as Isaac Feldman and Leah ms Yedleck, who were married in 1883. Unfortunately (and unusually) it does not give the town of marriage, only “Russia”. However, this tells us that Isaac and Leah were in Scotland by 1894.
2 I found no Feldmans in Scotland in the 1891 Census, which suggests they may have been in England in 1891, or had not yet left Russia.
3 In 1897, Leah “Jedlin”, “widow”, married L Goldberg (widower) in Glasgow. Leah’s husband, Isaac Feldman, must have died between 1894-1897 (although I could not find a death certificate for him in Scotland). “Jedlin” is another form of “Yedleck” (accent problems?). Leah’s parents are given as Abraham and Anne (= Chana/Hannah?). Leah is aged 29, therefore born c1868.
4 In 1894, a Leah Feldman (born 1867) applied to the Parish for Poor Relief. Perhaps Isaac had just died?
5 Lazarus Goldberg had previously been married to Rachel, who died in April 1897 (he remarried as sooon as August of that year!):
Death certificate: Rachel Goldberg Married to Lazarus Goldberg, slipper maker Died 12 April 1897, 43 Potterrow, Edinburgh, aged 42 Parents: Julius Wilks, carter, deceased/Minnie Wilks, ms ? Died of consumption and asthma
Rachel is buried in Newington cemetery, Edinburgh.
6 Birth certificate: Jacob Goldberg
Born 30 May 1895, 43 Potterrow, Edinburgh
Parents: Lazarus Goldberg, slipper dealer Rachel ms Wilks Married: 21 September 1873, Leeds
So Lazarus had married Rachel in Leeds – perhaps they knew Leah and Isaac Feldman, who (also perhaps) lived in Leeds, as did the Cussins.
7 In 1900, Lazarus and Leah had a son, Henry Goldberg, born in Edinburgh, and therefore a half-brother to Leba Feldman.
8 In 1902, they had a daughter:
Birth certificate: Betsy Goldberg
Born 28 June 1902, 21 North Richmond Street, Edinburgh
Lazarus Goldberg, boot and shoe hawker / Leah Goldberg, previously Feldman, ms Jedlin Married: 31 August 1897, Glasgow
9 In the census of 1901, the family are living in Edinburgh (see enclosed)- at 15 North Richmond Street. With them are Lazarus’s children from his first marriage (Benjamin, Moses, Mary, Katie , Harry, Jacob and Samuel), Rebecca (Leba) (with the surname Goldberg), and new baby Henry.
By coincidence, Samuel Goldberg, youngest son of Lazarus and Rachel, was later to marry my grandmother’s cousin, Frances Tropp.
10 Henry Goldberg, son of Lazarus and Leah, married in 1927, by which time he had changed his name to Gold!
11 I could find no record of the deaths of Henry or his sister Betsy.
12 I enclose the death certificate of Leah Goldberg in 1909. Lazarus, who registered the death, stated that Leah’s first husband was “Morris” Feldman – no doubt a mistake.
13 I also enclose the marriage certificate of Rebecca Feldman to Louis Coussins in 1915.
14 Lazarus Goldberg died in 1931:
Death certificate: Lazarus Goldberg, drapery traveller; widower of 1- Rachel Wilks and 2- Leah Yedlin or Feldman
Died 3 November 1931, aged 79; 99 Gorbals Street, Glasgow
Parents: Benjamin Goldberg, general dealer; Katie ms ? Registered by H Goldberg, son, 41 Rutherglen Rd., Glasgow
15 I enclose the death certificate of Abraham Simon Coussin in 1947. I suspect he is buried in Glenduffhill Cemetery. (A phone call to the Glasgow Hebrew Burial Society on 0141 577 8226 should confirm this). Abraham’s parents are listed as Philip and Minnie (Steingold).
16 The copies of the naturalisation papers you sent for Hyman Cussin are interesting. Did you know about the New Zealand visit? Interesting to learn of the 7 children of Hyman and Annie.
17 Hyman died in 1977:
Death certificate: Hyman Cussin
Tailor, retired, widowed; born 7 June 1879; aged 98 Died 19 December 1977, Cowglen Hospital; usual residence: 55 Kingsknowe Drive, Rutherglen Registered by son, W.Cussin
18 Judah, son of Abraham:
Judah Cussin
Born 4 May 1909, 192 Govan St., Glasgow Abraham Cussin, fruiterer Milly (Amelia) ms Murnik Married 7 November 1890, Leeds
