Benjamin Goldberg
Hi Craig
I am also a grand daughter of
Benjamin Goldberg - mother's maiden name Louise Goldberg
married Harry Couzens.
I would like to get in touch
with my cousin Christine,
as like her, I am trying to piece together the origins and
original name prior to the Goldberg name.
To the best of my memory,
grandmother mentioned that 2 brothers (slipper makers) fled
Europe and married 2 sisters taking on their surname of
Goldberg, hence my desire to contact Christine Scarce. I
have not had contact with her for over 4 decades.
I would
appreciate any photos of
Lazarus Goldberg that you may have.
One Tree Hill, South
Australia.
Note from Craig
That was done and
Louise was put in touch with her cousin Christine Scarce, nee Goldberg
and the Lazarus Goldberg page with photographs is also here:
http://www.coussins.org/Feldman.htm
We thought that the Couzins may be a phonetic derivation of Coussin.
Coussins/ Cussin. We do not know. However, Hyman Cussin do go to New
Zealand in the 1920's to both start a new life there and meet relatives.
It may be that the Cussins became Couzins? Hyman came back to the UK as
his wife did not wish to leave her friends and family still living in
Glasgow.
If you have any more
information please let me know. |

Subject: Ber of zagare
Dear Craig,
I am writing just on an off chance that you know or may come across a
branch
of my family in researching yours.
I know that the surname "Ber" is not uncommon but who knows there might
be a
link. I see that one of your forebears (no pun intended!) was an Abraham
Ber
whom I imagine might have come from Zagare. My great great grandfather
was
Ber Zavel Ber and he came from Old Zagare. He was born in about 1830 -
1840,
was a tailor, and left Zagare in the early 1880s settling for some years
in
Manchester. Some of the family went on to South Africa and Ber Zavel Ber
(also known at times as Samuel Bear, Solomon Beare and affectionately in
the
family as Berazava) went on to Johannesburg where he died sometime
between
1916 and 1919 (different family accounts give different dates). Ber
Zavel
Ber was married to Ita Ber (nee Aronson) and they had at least 7
children:
Tirza Bassa Ber (later Lazerson, who settled in Manchester before the
rest
of the family and achieved greatly in the textile/lace industry), Feiga
Ber
later Lesik/lessik, Sarah Ber later Ginsburg, and unknown daughter Ber
who
ran away and died in childbirth in Paris, Harry Beare, Chaim Beare and
my
great grandfather Jack Beare (originally Jacob Ber, later John Frank
Beare).
If you have or should come across any connections I would really
appreciate
if you could let me know.
Just so you know I live in New Zealand but was born in South Africa. I
am a
Clinical psychologist & Jungian Psychoanalyst. I am a member of JGSGB
and
enjoy your contributions to Shemot.
Kind regards
Chris Milton
Hi Chris.
Very nice to hear from you.
My tree would probably have some connection with your side of the family
but I would not know at this stage where that would be. Here is the menu
page where you can browse around the information I have on Zagare ,
photographs of Zagare and some family information. www.coussins.org/Menu.htm
<http://www.coussins.org/Menu.htm>
South Africa and New Zealand have a family connection as many of us,
including myself, seem to go there at some stage. I emigrated to SA when
I was 18 but left to first go to Israel and the back to the UK when I
was in my early 20's
However, my great Uncle Hyman did go to New Zealand to meet family
members in or around the early 1920's and , as a tailor, found a
position there but his wife did not want to leave her family in Glasgow,
The Manchester RaKussins became well established but I would not at this
stage know if the family Ber and Beare would be linked by this stage.
Maybe they were., Until we have other family trees to read from that
would be hard. We could only link back through the trees if we could
find them. I am sure that Abraham Ber is the common link.
You can find trees here:
http://www.coussins.org/Family/Coussinstree.htm
<http://www.coussins.org/Family/Coussinstree.htm>
There is more information including the Leeds and Manchester trees here:
www.itsourfamily.co.uk
<http://www.itsourfamily.co.uk/>
On a different note, my great uncle was head of Psychology at Brighton
University so apparently near your profession.
I will let you know if we are fortunate in finding the link to Ber
Chris. It all depends on finding the trees and I have to wait until
someone else makes that link. Meantime, with your permission., I am
making a possible links page outlining the similar kinds of
material that you have given me and hopefully these snippets will give
someone a key to a link that opens up a tree connection to each other.
There are people all over the world working on their family trees and
they may find that missing link.
Kind regards,
Craig.

| June 2006 Hello!
My name is Jonathan Levine and I am descended from the Kantor and Ferkin
families from Zagare. I recently discovered a household in 1910
Philadelphia that contained my great-great uncle, Philip Cantor and his
family, along with an entire family of Racusins -- listed as cousins of
Philip Cantor. The Racusin family living with them was that of Philip &
Rebecca (Rivka) Racusin. Philip was born in 1877 Zagare, possibly to
Meyer Racusin. I also believe Philip had a brother named Ber. Phillip
Racusin's children were Rose, Esther, Florence, Morris & Charlie -- all
born between 1905 & 1921.
I'm not sure HOW I'm connected to this family, but I'm trying to learn!
I've done extensive research in the meantime -- tracing and connecting
the many Racusin/Rakusen families that settled in Philadelphia, NYC,
Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Washington DC and Chicago. I've also been in
touch with Wolfe Rakusin in South Africa who has shared his tree. I
also took the time to transcribe and connect (as much as possible) the
Rakuzin families living in Zagare and later Riga in the 1800's. It
seems there were several 'big' families descending from Abram, Schachno,
Wolf, Efraim, Ruvel, Leyba, Ermia & Tsalel. Without accurate records
from the late 1800's, and with the Anglicization of many Hebrew &
Yiddish names, it's been tricky to decisively connect the American
Racusins with those of the 'old country'.
I've recently discovered this entirely new Leeds connection and am
hoping one of you might be able to provide further insight. I noticed
the Coussins website has a link to a Rakuson database, but it always
leads to a dead page with no info.
I'd be most grateful for any and all info you'd be willing to share.
Any trees or databases you might have could be sent in pretty much any
format that's convenient for you -- and I understand if you're unable or
unwilling to send current generations. It's really the 1800's and early
1900's that I'm focusing on.
I look forward to hearing from you soon -- and thank you so much for
your time!
